China's First Mars Mission Delayed
Beijing, China (XNA) Oct 02, 2009
China's first Mars probe mission will be delayed because of Russia's decision to postpone the launch of its mission to the Martian moon Phobos from next month to the year 2011. Russia's Phobos-Grunt mission had been slated to lift off aboard a Zenith rocket in October on a three-year mission to study Phobos and return soil samples to Earth. Yinghuo-1 orbiter was set to be launched with the ... read more

Seeking Life's Shadow
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 02, 2009
They haven't yet figured out how to draw blood from stones, but a group of French researchers is offering new insight that could change how scientists search for signs of life in Martian rocks. By studying the laboratory fossilization of microorganisms, scientists have caught a glimpse into how early Earth and potential Martian life might be preserved in rocks. The scientists focused on ... more

Radial Channels Carved By Dry Ice
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 01, 2009
Spider-shaped features in the south polar region of Mars are carved by vaporizing dry ice in a dynamic seasonal process. This image from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter includes several of the distinctive features in an area 1.2 kilometers (three-fourths of a mile) wide. It is one of the HiRISE camera team's featured ... more

Spirit Makes Progress On Antenna Actuator
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 29, 2009
Spirit is recovering from the high-gain antenna (HGA) anomaly that occurred on Sol 2027 (Sept. 15, 2009). The HGA problem is suspected to be an apparent intermittent behavior in the dynamic brake relay for the HGA actuators, a problem that has been seen and mitigated before in other rover actuators. Diagnostics were run on the HGA and each actuator moved freely in both directions without ... more

    Opportunity Passes 11 Mile Mark
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 29, 2009
Opportunity has driven four out of the last six sols, making way to Endeavour crater. On sols 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2014 (Sept. 18, 20, 22 and 23), the rover drove 55 meters (180 feet), 71 meters (233 feet), 70 meters (230 feet) and 59 meters (194 feet), respectively, passing 11 miles of total odometry. Each drive was backwards heading to the west to avoid a large region of potentially risk ... more

It's A Grind To Make Mars Red
Potsdam, Germany (SPX) Sep 23, 2009
The widespread idea that Mars is red due to rocks being rusted by the water that once flooded the red planet may not be correct. Recent laboratory studies show that red dust may be formed by the ongoing grinding of surface rocks and that liquid water need not have played any significant role in the formation process. These findings, which open up the debate about the history of water on ... more

    AMASE 2009 Expedition Finishes
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 22, 2009
Before we get into the blogs, you may have noticed that we were unable to post everyday while we were aboard Lance. Loss of internet contact is part of an arctic expedition, and we were not able to get the posts out until now that we are off the ship. We may be rocket scientists, but there are things that even this group can't do! So, with apologies for the belatedness of these posts ... more

    Reconstruct Mars In Minutes
Potsdam, Germany (SPX) Sep 21, 2009
A computer system is under development that can automatically combine images of the Martian surface, captured by landers or rovers, in order to reproduce a three-dimensional view of the red planet. The resulting model can be viewed from any angle, giving astronomers a realistic and immersive impression of the landscape. This important new development has been presented at the European Plan ... more
