AMASE 2009 Expedition Finishes
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 22, 2009
Before we get into the blogs, you may have noticed that we were unable to post everyday while we were aboard Lance. Loss of internet contact is part of an arctic expedition, and we were not able to get the posts out until now that we are off the ship. We may be rocket scientists, but there are things that even this group can't do! So, with apologies for the belatedness of these posts ... read more

Reconstruct Mars In Minutes
Potsdam, Germany (SPX) Sep 21, 2009
A computer system is under development that can automatically combine images of the Martian surface, captured by landers or rovers, in order to reproduce a three-dimensional view of the red planet. The resulting model can be viewed from any angle, giving astronomers a realistic and immersive impression of the landscape. This important new development has been presented at the European Plan ... more

    Opportunity Departs Block Island
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 21, 2009
Opportunity completed the circumnavigation and full-circle imaging of the large meteorite "Block Island" and has resumed the long drive to Endeavour crater. On Sol 2001 (Sept. 9, 2009), the rover moved 9 meters (30 feet) around the meteorite to the fourth and fifth out of six planned positions. On the next sol Opportunity reached the sixth and final position around Block Island with ... more

Russia delays Mars probe launch until 2011: report
    Moscow (AFP) Sept 16, 2009
Russia will pushed back its flagship satellite mission to Mars' moon until 2011 in a move which will delay the joint launch of China's first Mars probe, space sources were cited as saying Wednesday. "The prospects of the spacecraft Phobos' flight to Mars was discussed at a conference of scientist and space industry firms today. The dominant opinion was that this flight would be put off until ... more

Patterns In Mars Crater Floors Give Picture Of Drying Lakes
Katlenburg, Germany (SPX) Sep 17, 2009
Networks of giant polygonal troughs etched across crater basins on Mars have been identified as desiccation cracks caused by evaporating lakes, providing further evidence of a warmer, wetter Martian past. The findings were presented this week at the European Planetary Science Congress by PhD student Mr. M. Ramy El Maarry of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research. The ... more

    Opportunity Update: Circling The Meteorite
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 11, 2009
Opportunity has commenced circumnavigation and full-circle imaging of the large meteorite "Block Island". On Sol 1997 (Sept. 5, 2009), the rover moved 5.7 meters (18.7 feet) to the second of six stand-off positions around the meteorite (the first position being the initial rover location). At each location Opportunity collects a set of images with the panoramic camera (Pancam). ... more

US manned space program too expensive: White House panel
    Washington (AFP) Sept 9, 2009
NASA's plans to fly to the moon and Mars are under threat from a lack of funds and the space agency needs another three billion dollars for its dreams to become reality, a presidential panel said. In a 12-page summary report released Tuesday offering a bleak assessment of plans to send astronauts back to the moon, the committee said the space agency would need the three billion dollars on to ... more

    Goddess Of The Arctic
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 09, 2009
AMASE reunited - August 13, 2009: The AMASE crews were united today thanks to several helicopter lifts from Ny-Alesund and some willing and able volunteers who established a tent camp on shore to free up enough rooms for all the Ny-Alesund personnel to move onto the ship. Props to go out to the helicopter pilot and mechanics who worked some serious magic getting all seven of us and our ... more
