Thousands Of New Images Show Mars In High Resolution
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 03, 2009
Thousands of newly released images from more than 1,500 telescopic observations by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show a wide range of gullies, dunes, craters, geological layering and other features on the Red Planet. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the orbiter recorded these images from the month of April through early August of this year. ... read more

Amase-ing Life On The Ice
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 01, 2009
The simple explanation for why there was no blog entry for yesterday is that yesterday rather bled into today - it's all a bit of a blur. Science being what it is, we were processing samples until the wee hours of the morning and headed to bed for a quick one-hour nap before rising from the dead to meet the Lance as it arrived at the ... more

Opportunity Continues Meteorite Examination - Sol 1981-1987
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 31, 2009
Opportunity is continuing its contact investigation of the 70-centimeter (28-inch) meteorite called "Block Island." On Sol 1981 (Aug. 20, 2009), the rover performed a very small rotation that moved the robotic arm (instrument deployment device, or IDD) in azimuth to reach new targets on the meteorite. On the next sol, the IDD collected a stack of microscopic imager (MI) images of ... more

Mars Orbiter Puts Itself In Safe Mode Again
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 31, 2009
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter put itself into a safe mode Wednesday morning, Aug. 26, for the fourth time this year, while maintaining spacecraft health and communications. While in safe mode, the spacecraft has limited activities pending further instructions from ground controllers. Tight budget quashes US space ambitions: panel
    Washington (AFP) Aug 19, 2009
US ambitions for manned space exploration have hit a major hurdle in the wake of severe budget constraints, according to preliminary findings of a panel appointed by President Barack Obama. Reaching Mars was deemed too risky while returning to the Moon by 2020 was ruled out barring an additional three billion dollars per year to replace the retiring space shuttle fleet and build bigger rocke ... more

Spirit Hits 2000 Sols On Mars Duty
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 20, 2009
Today marks the 2,000th Martian day, or sol, of what was initially planned as a 90-sol mission on Mars for NASA's Spirit rover. Spirit's twin, Opportunity, will reach the 2,000-sol milestone on Sept. 8. Both rovers have found rocks altered by past action of water on Mars. Both show some signs of aging but remain capable of further scientific investigations. Since their landing halfwa ... more
