Amase-ing Life On The Ice
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 01, 2009
The simple explanation for why there was no blog entry for yesterday is that yesterday rather bled into today - it's all a bit of a blur. Science being what it is, we were processing samples until the wee hours of the morning and headed to bed for a quick one-hour nap before rising from the dead to meet the Lance as it arrived at the ... read more

Opportunity Continues Meteorite Examination - Sol 1981-1987
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 31, 2009
Opportunity is continuing its contact investigation of the 70-centimeter (28-inch) meteorite called "Block Island." On Sol 1981 (Aug. 20, 2009), the rover performed a very small rotation that moved the robotic arm (instrument deployment device, or IDD) in azimuth to reach new targets on the meteorite. On the next sol, the IDD collected a stack of microscopic imager (MI) images of ... more

Mars Orbiter Puts Itself In Safe Mode Again
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 31, 2009
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter put itself into a safe mode Wednesday morning, Aug. 26, for the fourth time this year, while maintaining spacecraft health and communications. While in safe mode, the spacecraft has limited activities pending further instructions from ground controllers. Engineers have begun the process of diagnosing the problem prior to restoring the orbiter to normal ... more

Spirit Hits 2000 Sols On Mars Duty
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 20, 2009
Today marks the 2,000th Martian day, or sol, of what was initially planned as a 90-sol mission on Mars for NASA's Spirit rover. Spirit's twin, Opportunity, will reach the 2,000-sol milestone on Sept. 8. Both rovers have found rocks altered by past action of water on Mars. Both show some signs of aging but remain capable of further scientific investigations. Since their landing halfwa ... more

Planned Rover Test To Run A Week Or More
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 17, 2009
Mars rover team members are planning a long-duration experiment with the test rover at JPL beginning next week. This test will check whether favorable motion seen in earlier tests can be sustained to gain as much distance in the sandbox as Spirit would need to complete on Mars to escape its predicament. The team expects to drive the test rover for several hundred meters, or yards, worth of ... more
