JPL Mars Sandbox Testing Continues For Spirit Extraction
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 27, 2009
Mars rover team members have begun a new phase of testing at JPL - using longer-duration experiments - in their preparations for driving Spirit again on Mars. They have completed assessments of individual maneuvers, using the test rover in a box of sloped, soft soil that simulates conditions at the patch of Martian ground called "Troy," where Spirit's wheels have dug themselves hub-deep. ... read more

Craters, Lava Flows And Tectonic Features Near Ma'adim Vallis
Paris, France (ESA) Jul 27, 2009
The Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera imaged a region close to Ma'adim Vallis, one of the largest canyons on Mars, finding craters, lava flows and tectonic features. After Valles Marineris, Ma'adim Vallis is one of the largest canyons on Mars. The region, lying south-east of Ma'adim Vallis, was imaged on 24 December 2008. The pictures are centred at about 29 degrees S and 182 ... more

Opportunity Heads Toward 'Block Island' Cobble
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 24, 2009
Opportunity had been driving to the west to go around a large field of impassable dunes on her long way to Endeavour crater. On Sol 1947 (July 16, 2009), the rover drove a little over 70 meters (230 feet) to the west, slightly north. On the next sol, the rover performed a Mars quake experiment, reading the inertial measurement unit (IMU) accelerometers while stationary. Another westward ... more

Australia Selected To Support Research For Future Mars Mission
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Jul 23, 2009
Volunteers from the Mars Society Australia's Sydney chapter have been selected to support this year's Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS) expedition by running the Pacific-based Mission Support Centre. FMARS is an annual research expedition conducted at a research station located at Devon Island near the North Pole. The peer reviewed research conducted at Devon Island, a Mars-like 'an ... more

    Opportunity On the Move Again
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2009
Opportunity began the week positioned over exposed outcrop collecting in-situ (contact) science data and resting the right-front wheel's actuator. On Sol 1942 (July 11, 2009), Opportunity began moving again with a 67-meter (220-foot) drive. The right-front wheel motor current showed some improvement from the actuator resting and extra mobility heating. The rover performed another lon ... more

Primitive Main Belt Asteroids May Have Formed Far From Sun
Boulder CO (SPX) Jul 16, 2009
Many of the objects found today in the asteroid belt located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter may have formed in the outermost reaches of the solar system, according to an international team of astronomers led by scientists from Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). The team used numerical simulations to show that some comet-like objects residing in a disk outside the original orbit ... more

    Astronauts May Get Their Wheaties
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jul 17, 2009
Does a sandwich on Mars taste different? The answer could be no, according to new research that found long-term spaceflight exposure doesn't change later generations of wheat seeds. Molecular biologist Robert Ferl of the University of Florida and colleagues studied wheat seeds descended from plants that flew on the Russian Mir space station. The progenitor plants were in space for 167 days ... more

NASA Stirs Up The First Development Dome Welds For Ares I Upper Stage
Huntsville AL (SPX) Jul 16, 2009
Using a metal joining technique called friction stir welding, the Ares Projects team at the Marshall Center has completed welding the first liquid hydrogen tank dome being developed to define manufacturing processes for the upper stage of the Ares I - the rocket that will launch explorers to the moon, Mars and beyond in coming decades. The innovative welding process produces high-strength ... more
