UCF Invention Onboard Phoenix Mars Lander Will Reveal True Colors
Orlando FL (SPX) May 23, 2008
When NASA's Phoenix lander touches down on Mars Sunday, it will be carrying two special tools to give scientists their best look at the Red Planet's true colors. They're called color-calibration targets and are about the size of hockey pucks. Each device is covered with color chips, designed by University of Central Florida Physics and Astronomy Professor Dan Britt and two students. When P ... read more

Foot-Dragging Mars Rover Finds Yellowstone-Like Hot Spring Deposits
Tempe AZ (SPX) May 23, 2008
Deposits of nearly pure silica discovered by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit in Gusev Crater formed when volcanic steam or hot water (or maybe both) percolated through the ground. Such deposits are found around hydrothermal vents like those in Yellowstone National Park. That's the conclusion of planetary scientists working with data collected by the rover's Miniature Thermal Emission Spe ... more

Heat-Sensing Camera Helps Phoenix Probe Land Safely On Mars
Tempe AZ (SPX) May 23, 2008
On Sunday, May 25, 2008, the Phoenix spacecraft (a joint project between NASA and the University of Arizona) will arrive at Mars after a 10-month cruise from Earth. Traveling initially at 12,500 miles per hour (5.7 kilometers per second), Phoenix will make a hair-raising, nail-biting, 6-and-a-half-minute plunge though the Martian atmosphere to a smooth landing on icy dirt not far from the edge ... more

Mars Express Support To Phoenix Landing
Paris, France (ESA) May 23, 2008
Beginning late on 25 May, Mars Express will execute a series of pre-programmed commands specially designed to support NASA's Phoenix lander. The ESA spacecraft will conduct a high-speed slew, enabling it to track Phoenix as it enters the martian atmosphere. Mars Express will point its Lander Communications Antenna toward Phoenix's planned entry trajectory and record signals transmitted fro ... more

Phoenix Spacecraft On Course For May 25 Mars Landing
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 23, 2008
With three days and 3 million miles left to fly before arriving at Mars, NASA's Phoenix spacecraft is on track for its destination in the Martian arctic. "The latest calculation from our navigation team shows the center of the area where we're currently headed lies less than eight miles from the center of our target area," said Barry Goldstein, Phoenix project manager at NASA's Jet Propuls ... more

Secrets Of Martain Suitability For Life May Be Down In The Dirt
Mountain View CA (SPX) May 23, 2008
Shortly after NASA's Phoenix lander settles onto Mars' frigid, northern plains on May 25, it will undertake what is literally a microscopic examination of the red sand beneath its feet. By doing so, it may find evidence that liquid water - generally agreed to be a prerequisite of life - once pooled here. Examination of the Martian soil is part of the task of a sophisticated on-board instru ... more

    Rendezvous With Mars
Moffet Field CA (SPX) May 20, 2008
NASA's Phoenix lander is less than a week from touch down in the frozen northern wastes of Mars, where it will search for signs that, in the planet's recent past, the region may have been habitable. Phoenix is the first mission to target Mars' northern polar region. NASA's Mars Polar Lander (MPL), launched in 1999 toward the planet's southern pole, crashed upon landing. The two Viking ... more

Phoenix Probe Due To Touch Down On Martian Surface
London, UK (SPX) May 19, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander is due to land on Mars this month (May) where it will probe the arctic landscape searching for conditions favourable for past or present life. UK scientists from Imperial College London and the University of Bristol are involved in the mission and will be based at the University of Arizona's Science Operations Centre on landing day where they will be part of the ... more

LIDAR Detector Will Build Three-Dimensional Super Roadmaps Of Planets And Moons
Rochester NY (SPX) May 16, 2008
Technology that could someday "MapQuest" Mars and other bodies in the solar system is under development at Rochester Institute of Technology's Rochester Imaging Detector Laboratory, in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory. Three-Dimensional "super roadmaps" of other planets and moons would provide robots, astronauts and engineers details ... more

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Finds Interior Of Mars Is Colder
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 16, 2008
New observations from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter indicate that the crust and upper mantle of Mars are stiffer and colder than previously thought. The findings suggest any liquid water that might exist below the planet's surface, and any possible organisms living in that water, would be located deeper than scientists had suspected. "We found that the rocky surface of Mars is ... more

Opportunity Gearing Up For Attempt To Move Robotic Arm
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 14, 2008
After completing a battery of diagnostic tests, engineers planned to attempt to move Opportunity's shoulder azimuth joint, also known as Joint 1, during the coming week. Tests during the past week included electrical resistance tests at the warmest and coldest times of day to determine if a persistent stall in the joint was dependent on temperature. Test results indicated that electrical ... more

NASA Phoenix Mission Ready For Mars Landing
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 14, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander is preparing to end its long journey and begin a three-month mission to taste and sniff fistfuls of Martian soil and buried ice. The lander is scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet May 25. Phoenix will enter the top of the Martian atmosphere at almost 21,000 kilometers per hour (almost 13,000 mph). In seven minutes, the spacecraft must complete a challenging ... more

Phoenix Landing Area Viewed By Mars Color Imager
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 13, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander is scheduled to land on the Martian northern plains near 68 degrees north latitude, 127 degrees west longitude on May 25, 2008. In preparation for the landing, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been monitoring weather in the region around the landing site. On April 20, 2008, the orbiter's Mars Color Imager camera captured this view of a large region of northern Ma ... more
